We will begin our journey at 5:00 AM, heading northwest towards the high plateau of the Andes Mountains. After traveling 90 km, we will reach the Tatio geothermal field at an altitude of 4,250 meters above sea level, arriving just as dawn breaks, a few minutes before 7:00 AM. There, we will meet the park rangers from the Atacameño communities of Toconce and Caspana, who manage the natural sanctuary also known as Tatio Mallku. We will start with a hike of approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, exploring the different sections of the geothermal field and its various surface thermal features, in an environment that seems to have been plucked from the primeval earth or another planet. Once we have finished exploring the geothermal field, we will leave the nature reserve for a hearty breakfast (which could also be eaten before the hike). At approximately 10 am we will head back to San Pedro along the same road that leads to El Tatio. Along the way, we will see a variety of highland fauna, high-altitude vegetation, wetlands, and small villages, always next to the Andes mountain range. We will see an active volcano next to the Putana River wetland of the same name, the pre-Hispanic town of Machuca, and the Valley of the Cactus, where we can see giant cacti up close, among others.
