El Tatio Geysers
Puritama Short Hot Springs
The Puritama hot springs are located downhill from the El Tatio geothermal field, in a canyon descending from the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of 3,540 meters above sea level. They face the Andean massifs and one of the highest mountains in the area, Sairecabur, at 5,960 meters above sea level. At the top of the hill, you park your vehicle and walk 500 meters down a dirt path. Once at the bottom, you will find changing facilities, terraces with tables and chairs.
They are all pools, for bathing with a slight difference in temperature between them, the hottest is the first one at the top and decreases downwards as the water moves away from the initial outcrop, the water temperature reaches 28-30°C.
The Puritama hot springs, located at a higher altitude and in a different geological zone than San Pedro de Atacama, have a temperature that, while not hot, is not cold during the day. Alongside the pools and the Puritama River, which originates there, there is typical vegetation of the area and small birds. The place is a small nature sanctuary in the Andes Mountains, where an air of harmony and tranquility prevails.
Although there are no showers on site, the water, emerging from underground mountain aquifers in a mountain environment, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, is rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, and boron.
Due to their composition, they are known for their therapeutic and revitalizing properties, traditionally recommended for relieving rheumatism, arthritis, and stress. Therefore, not showering immediately after bathing will not cause any inconvenience or problems before you arrive at your accommodation and take a shower.
